Aventum Plasma Gasification Adopted by JESCO in Japan for Safe PCB Waste Destruction

Implementation Date

January 1, 2013

By

JESCO (Japan Environmental Storage & Safety Corporation)

City

Kitakyushu

story image

Description

JESCO, the Japan Environmental Storage and Safety Corporation implemented 2 Plasma plants in 2009 and 2013. The facilities, installed in Kitakyushu and Hokkaido, are two twin Japanese plants for the destruction by plasma conversion of hazardous waste containing PCBs (electronic circuits and electrical ballasts). Plasma conversion technology collectively processes a variety of PCB-contaminated waste into a sealed drum format that ensures safety.

Impact & Result

  • Safely destroys ~10.4 metric tons of PCB-contaminated waste daily, mitigating environmental and health risks.
  • Two plasma furnaces, each with a 1.3 MW plasma torch, provide efficient and large-scale waste treatment.
  • Converts hazardous materials into sealed drum formats, ensuring safe, long-term storage and reduced contamination potential.

Solution Spotlight

The increase in the amount and complexity of waste is currently a major environmental and health problem. Plasma technology is a proven and safe technology for treating any type of waste, obtaining a material and energy valorization in the process. This technology meets the most demanding environmental standards, such as the European Union waste framework directive. The application of the Plasma Converter System in waste treatment is based on the creation of an intense field of radiant energy to achieve the molecular dissociation of solids, liquids, or gases, giving rise to a gas formed basically by a mixture of H2 and CO and to inert vitrified matter where the greatest trapped is part of the inorganic matter. As there is no combustion there are almost no emissions and insignificant ash is formed. The Plasma Converter System recycles waste by converting it into raw materials: a gas called syngas - a source of energy - metals and an amorphous silicate.
